The prime criterion of the Graduate School to select PhD students is scientific excellence. The formal requirement for the admission to the Graduate School is a master or diploma degree in a field relevant to the intended orientation of the doctoral degree to be obtained. Any additional specific qualifications and/or professional experience will be considered in judging on the applicant’s scientific capability, but are not required.
Aiming at educating excellent young scientists in the field of marine sciences this Graduate School offers PhD students, whose PhD projects deal with any aspect of Global Change in the Marine Realm, e.g.:
* Structured curriculum (e.g. courses, presentations, internship)
* Team supervision (e.g. thesis committee)
* Support programmes (e.g. additional funding, family support)
Within a Global-Change framework the Graduate School– structured into four research areas - covers the marine realm from the deep sea to the coastal regions and encompasses the natural sciences as well as the humanities.
The majority of the expected average total number of ~60 PhD students for the fully established Graduate School will be financed by externally funded research projects. Thus, all PhD students employed at the University of Bremen and the participating institutions, dealing with a relevant topic, can apply for the membership in the Graduate School.
Externally funded PhD students should apply within the first six months of their PhD terms.
The application has to include a motivation letter, a description of the PhD project, a CV and the application form. Furthermore, it has to be accompanied by a letter from the supervisor confirming that the PhD student has been selected in a competitive selection process, that the supervisor is willing to share the PhD student’s supervision with a thesis committee and that she/he agrees that the PhD student has to follow the Graduate School’s curriculum. On acceptance both, the PhD student and the supervisor, become members of the respective assemblies of the Graduate School.
Please note that PhD students that are members of other structured PhD programs (e.g. PIP, EUROPROX, MARMIC, Helmholtz Research School etc.) are not eligible for the Graduate School.
Next deadline for applications: July 1, 2008
